What is gender dysphoria?

“Discomfort or distress that is caused by a discrepancy between a person’s gender identity and that person’s sex assigned at birth (and the associated gender role and/or primary and secondary sex characteristics)”

How might individuals display gender dysphoria?

Children

  • wish to be another gender
  • unhappy with sexual characteristics and/or function
  • strong preference to use toys, clothes, games that are typical of the other gender
  • prefers to play with children of the other gender
  • desire for sex characteristics that match their preferred gender

Adolescents

  • if gender dysphoria was present in childhood, behaviors may intensify with the onset of puberty
  • a feeling of “mismatch” between their expressed/experienced gender and their natal sex characteristics
  • display strong desire to be rid of primary and secondary sexual characteristics because of the “mismatch”
